Planning Your Maternity Photo Session

"What should I wear to my photo shoot?"

1.) Colors - Solids work best in photos: white, black, brown, gray.

2.) Fabrics - look for thin clingy, fabrics with some stretch.

3.) Pants - jeans (any color), black pants (yoga pants work great).

4.) Dresses - can be very sophisticated and sexy, but choose your dress carefully. Look for dresses that cling to your shape, not the loose, comfortable style.

5.) Tops - Any shirt or cardigan that opens down the front works well... Try a big, white, button-down men's shirt.

6.) Necklines - select v-necks or deep scoop necks

7.) Tanks or camisoles - anything clingy, fitted or stretchy in solid colors (white, black, red, blue...)

8.) Special & unique - unusual items like large swaths of fabric in bold colors like purple, red and royal blue can make for stunning results. Or consider saris or large scarves. Choose fabrics that are very sheer, light and flowing.

"Day Of Your Session"

1.) Bring props! Baby shoes, baby toy, hats, jackets, sports equipment, a chair, balloons, fresh flowers, gardening equipment, books, or anything you can possibly think of that tells the story of you. This isn't required, but it sure is tons of fun.

2.) Makeup, Chapstick, and Glasses - Apply your makeup like you normally would, but just a bit heavier. Please also pack the basics and bring them with you on the shoot in case you need a quick touch up. Be sure to moisturize your lips well before your photo shoot. Dry, cracked lips are really hard to touch up later in the pictures. If you wear glasses, they could reflect light and cause glare and shadows across your eyes. Editing out glare and shadows takes an enormous amount of time and is very expensive. If you have an anti-reflective lens, we have nothing to worry about.. If not, consider talking to your optometrist. Most eye doctors have a spare pair of frames without glass you can borrow for your session. You will probably need to go in and see your eye doctor at least a week or two before your session to make sure they can help you and that they have a similar pair of frames in stock.

3.) Your Hair - Be sure to bring some things to do quick fixes to your hair between shots (hair spray, brush, comb, etc) If your hair is very long, you might want to bring some clips, bobby pins, hair bands, or cute head bands to pull your hair back if it starts bugging you or if you just want to change up your look.
